This week I have again talked and chatted several times about kindness. I really don't like, when someone talks about being too kind or nice. In my opinion there is no such thing as too kind. This is an issue, that's important to me and I have wrote previous blog post about Too nice .

I had interesting Twitter conversation with my Finnish Twitter friends, which started from punishments and continued to bullying. And there it was again, the accusation, that someone was too kind/nice. By the way, what's really interesting is, that these children, who are "too kind" have many times parents, that are said to be difficult or even aggressive. Paradoxes of life ;-).

Then an idea hit me. When we demand someone not to be too kind, are we really talking about kindness? Is the real problem kindness? What if the problem is, that we are raised in the culture, that wants us to be obedient?

If we are taught to sit quiet and be obedient, where can we find our voice, the thought that we are worthy of defending ourselves? If we were taught more to be kind to each other, maybe there would not be such demand of defense in the first place?

History has taught us, that it's really dangerous to create such societies, where citizens blindly follow their leaders, where people are supposed to be 100% obedient. So it might be time to look our culture and how we raise children to be active citizens, whom have voice to use, when it's necessary. It's important to defend oneself, but it's also important to have a courage to defend other people too. And to accomplish that, we need to be kind to ourselves and kind to others.

So maybe it would be time to try to be as kind as we can?

Recently we have started to speak about hate talk (I don't have a clue is this the right term, it's translation from Finnish vihapuhe). There has been always hate talk in our society, but now with Internet and social media we can't pretend, that we don't see or hear it. Sometimes hate talk is plain stupid, sometimes it reaches the level, when it's dangerous and distressing. It's clear, that most of us don't approve people behaving like that, but what is not clear, is what we can do to decrease hate talk in our society?

Hate is a typical feeling for human beings. It has it's meaning, it tells something important of ourselves and of our experiences. More important is, what we choose to do after the feeling of hate has appeared. Acting in blind hate or rage rarely brings anything good. It might give some immediate rewards, like silencing everybody else, but in the long run it hurts everybody. Acting all the time directed by hate separates people, kills trust, kills love. It's a spiral, when you get deep enough, the only way out is to seek help.

Here's few questions that I think about:

What creates hate in our society?
What would help people to handle their feelings of hate?
How could people be helped to express their opinions without hate?
How could we help people to communicate in more peaceful way?

People who use hate talk, who commit crimes, who are aggressive and violent are not some separate group, they are not monsters. They are people like us, living in the same world. We tend to separate ourselves from them, but in certain conditions, we are all capable of behaving badly, sometimes even capable of committing crimes. These problem can't be solved by hating people who end up behaving badly. And I don't mean, that they shouldn't take responsibility of what they have done. Of course they should. I just challenge you to invent concrete ways to help people and to make our world less aggressive.Katri Kytöpuuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13073271338593796893noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-246681595417944610.post-83891015920645313032013-04-09T12:44:00.000+03:002013-04-09T18:01:41.867+03:00Häirikköyhteiskunta?

Viimepäivinä koulukeskustelu on taas vellonut suurilla aalloilla.

Katri Kytöpuuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13073271338593796893noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-246681595417944610.post-79626243820225148712013-04-03T09:30:00.000+03:002013-04-03T09:30:22.476+03:00Do you teach people around you to be active or passive?

Do you ask questions?
Do you try to understand people and their thoughts?
Do you appreciate people around you? Do you appreciate their thoughts?
Are you willing to change your opinions, if someone gives a good enough reason to that change?
Do you give such feedback, that people feel, that they have learned something valuable?

Olen vakavasti huolestunut.

Sellaisessa, jossa he, joilla on heikoin mahdollisuus tuoda oma äänensä esiin, eivät saa ihmisarvoista palvelua tai hoitoa.

Ugh.

First confession: there are few things, which I find so serious that there is no room for laughter. Even though I consider myself to have pretty good sense of humor, bullying is one issue in which I don't see anything funny. My lack of humor might come as a surprise to my friends, but as I get older I have learned to warn people early enough of this.

Few years ago I woke up and started to think more, what I did find funny and when I did laugh without thinking, what I was laughing about. I realized, that I automatically laughed issues which really weren't funny at all. For example in Facebook rotates many pictures about gender roles, which really are stereotypical and not true at all. So now I have a social media strategy and it's core is kindness. I don't just share things without thinking first, if I really can be proud of the stuff I share.

Humor and laughter are very important things to us. They make life so much easier. But "humor" is also easy way to undermine important and difficult things. With humor it's sometimes too easy to undermine people. It's important to reflect how you use humor and to what kind of things/issues you laugh at.

If you look my streams in Facebook and Twitter, you probably find, that I am not the master of avoiding destructive humor. But I try to be better each day. :-)

Viimeisen viikon aikana on taas keskusteltu väkivallasta jääkiekossa.

Toinen asia, jota olen pohtinut on urheululiittojen antamat rangaistukset.

Koska
yksikään sovitteluasia ei ole samanlainen, hyvä sovittelija
kehittyy koko ajan ja on halukas oppimaan uusia asioita itsestään
ja siitä, miten me ihmiset toimimme erilaisissa tilanteissa.

Vuosien mittaan
elämässä, oppiminen on keskeinen asia. Siksi kaikessa
sovittelijoiden kanssa toteutettavassa toiminnassa pitäisi miettiä,
miten oppimisesta tehdään motivoivaa ja palkitsevaa. Tämä on
olennaista kaikille osapuolille.:

Sovittelijoille on
uskaltaisi tulla puhumaan. Tämä tarkoittaa sitä, että jo
peruskoulutus pitää rakentaa niin, että jokaisella osallistujalla
on mahdollisuus tuoda oma äänensä esiin. Siksi koulutus ei voi
olla pelkkää luennoimista. Siihen on sisällyttävä osioita,
hoitavat puhumisen. Silloin osalle ihmisistä voi jäädä sellainen
mielikuva, ettei heidän ajatuksensa ole tärkeitä.

On ehdottoman

helpottamaan toimintaa. Kun perusmotivaatio on kehittyä, ei ole
olemassa sellaista asiaa kuin negatiivinen palaute. Kaikki asiallinen
palaute toimii kehittymistä tukien. Erittäin tärkeää on muistaa
antaa myös kiitosta hyvin tehdystä työstä. Tämä tukee sitä
mikä jo toimii ja kannustaa jatkamaan samalla polulla. Työntekijälle
palautekeskustelut tarjoavat mahdollisuuden oppia sovittelusta

Näiden tilanteiden purkaminen on tärkeää. Olennaista on miettiä,
mitä tilanteesta opittiin ja oliko jotain sellaista,
mitä voisi tehdä toisin seuraavalla kerralla. Koulutuksissa ja
tapaamisissa pitää aktiivisesti pyytää sovittelijoita kertomaan
tarinoita myös onnistuneista sovitteluista. Liian harvoin mietimme,

Miksi oppimiseen
motivointi on tärkeää?

Sovittelu on
muihin tilaisuuksiin. Mikään yhteisö ei pysy kasassa, jos aina
keskitytään vain ongelmiin. Siksi pitää aktiivisesti miettiä,
millä pidetään yllä sellaista harmoniaa, etteivät ihmiset uuvu
vapaaehtoistyössä. Oppimisen on parhaimmillaan hauskaa. Oppivan ja
motivoituneen vapaaehtoistoimijoiden yhteisön kehittäminen vaatii
kunnollisen pohjatyön ja suunnitelman. Se vaatii vision siitä,
millä lailla oppimista tuetaan arkipäivän työssä, koulutuksissa
ja tapaamisissa. Kuitenkin kaikki työ yhteisön eteen kannattaa
tehdä. Se tekee työstä kaikille osallisille mielenkiintoista ja
haastavaa.
voittavat.

In our world we value answers, when we really should value questions and those who ask. As children we ask questions after another and that's how we create picture of our world. It's a real shame, that too many times the curiosity is killed and we forget the art of wondering and asking questions. But we can relearn and develop ourselves to be artists in asking questions.

How do you do it? First you must not fear to ask questions. Don't expect, that you get perfect answer to your every question. And understand, that people don't have to answer every time. Great thing about asking questions is, that you can practice it where ever you are.

How to do excellent questions? First you have to learn to listen. More so you need to have true intention of understanding the person/s you listen. The best questions born from listening and from dialogue. Then you should learn to do such questions, which invite people to think and tell, what they are thinking. Questions to which others can answer only yes or no are way to use power. And that's why people sometimes feel like they are interrogated. When you master that skill of open and inviting questions, then should evaluate are your questions such, that they have some positive effect.

The art of asking questions is bit similar than driving a car. The more you practice the more the skill becomes automatic. First it might be wise to have a pen and paper and to write down the questions, so you can concentrate to listening. But with a practice you probably don't need paper in the end.

With every question you can make your world more interesting and colourful. You have a chance of understanding better people around you and you might learn something new every day.

The true power is in the questions.
As I was walking in a lovely winter weather, two thoughts started to circle in my mind. First one is about management. We are trying to manage change, creativity and conflicts. If you made a search in google, you wound probably find infinite number of blogs and articles about those. But are we trying to manage wrong things? What if we tried to manage learning? What if we'll try to manage learning mindset? What if we'll try to support curiosity and try to inspire people to challenge themselves?

The second thought was, that maybe we really can't manage change, creativity, conflicts or learning. Maybe we should try to lead people to learn? We should create such environments, where we lead people to learn with our own example. What would it take to create such space?

What do you think?
These are the latest results of my cooking project. It started over 2 years ago, because I needed to have more variety of the food I eat. First I collected easy to do recipies. Already at the start I found many recipies which had beet root in, and I have been in love of that red root vegetable ever since. These are patties, that have minced meat and beet root in them and they are absolutely delicious!
This autumn there has been lots of birds flying in flocks. It's amazing to follow, what kind of patterns the birds do, flocks divine, come back again, disappear, when birds find suitable tree. Sometimes when it's dark, you can hear the birds, but not see them. Then the feeling is almost like in the movie The Birds. These events have always been very vibrant, almost breath taking. Today we heard about different countries and cultures, enjoyed of variety of music and dance and met many new friends from all over the world. And I bet it brought a wide smile to faces of everyone of us.Katri Kytöpuuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13073271338593796893noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-246681595417944610.post-30116735460063421002012-11-20T22:08:00.001+02:002012-11-20T22:08:45.065+02:00Day 54
First I wasn't happy with the fact that my Samsung Galaxy S has no flashlight. But then I noticed how amazing colors appeared in pictures. When it's grey outside, one can always add some green inside. I use to be hopeless with plants, every one died sooner than later. But then I learned the most important thing: I stopped trying to drown them. So moderation was the key in this case too..
Some are afraid of darkness. I miss it in summer or when there is no escaping of the city lights. Darkness is peaceful, it gives me time to think. In darkness the rays of light make the world seem totally different. Sometimes more scary, sometimes more magical. But never boring.

I have started a new project 48 days ago. I decided that I'm going to take one picture per day, picture that tells something of my day or where I have spent my day. So far it has been challenging as I have found out, that I normally move around in quite small area. In the same time I have noticed, that I see my world differently, when I look it through camera. Or I see more of the world.

I use Samsung Galaxy S and Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 to take the pictures and to edit them. Sometimes I have wished, that I would have had a better camera, but after a thought, I like the challenge that my Samsung devices give to me. And I have learned to be merciful to myself, my pictures tell about my world and they are perfect in their own way.

If you are interested to see my pictures, you can see them in instagram.com/katrik2 . There a quite a few pictures already, the picture of the day 48 is http://instagram.com/p/R-oVT_kAB3/ .

The picture in this blog is special to me and tells you something about me. Those who follow me in Twitter or are my Facebook friends know, that I seldom use pictures of myself, not even as avatars. So if you are in Finland and see the combination from the picture, there is a high probability, that you are also looking at me. Feel free to come and say hello!

I have decided to go one step further with my project. I'm going to share the picture of the day also here in my blog and add a small story to each one. What kind of story, I have no idea yet. We'll see what happens tomorrow as the day 49 will be the first one with a story.

Wish me luck :-)!
As a victim-offender mediator it is very important question and I talk a lot about it with my mediator friends. But we talk about situation, where the one who has been hurt/violated/injured forgives to one who have hurt her/him. But many times it would be as important to forgive yourself too.

I have met many victims, who have a hard time to forgive themselves. "Why didn't I defend myself? Why didn't I leave? Why didn't I act differently, so that I wouldn't have irritated him/her?" Unfortunately we who want to help, sometimes add the self-blame: "You should leave her/him? Why didn't you hit back?"

What if our inability to forgive ourselves, can turn to hate, bitterness and demand of revenge? What if we really can forgive others after we have forgiven ourselves? We can't change the past incidents, but we can learn from them. Life will throw us to situations, where we don't know what to do and where we feel ourselves helpless. We try to survive the best way we know, with abilities and tools we have in that particular moment.

So what if we change the questions we ask ourselves after different kind of crisis. Did I have any other option to act differently? Would it changed anything? Have I learned something? What have I learned? Have I forgiven myself?Katri Kytöpuuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13073271338593796893noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-246681595417944610.post-89343061526359740622012-03-08T19:38:00.003+02:002012-03-09T05:56:13.995+02:00"We didn't know, it was that bad"This week we have again talked about bullying at school in Finland. We have been shown a story of Elisa, 15 year old girl, who was brutally bullied. In fact Elisa was threatened, assaulted, she experienced such violence, which to most of us is totally outside of our experience. Unfortunately in Elisa's case, violence got so bad, that she didn't see any other choice than kill herself. Such a waste.

I haven't seen any interview of Elisa's teachers, but in one story, they have said that "we didn't know, it was that bad". I worked almost 5 years with targets of bullying and this isn't the first time I heard that sentence. "We didn't know, it was that bad" in fact says, that teachers knew about bullying, they just didn't see it so serious, that they would have done something. I just wonder, how bad it should be, so that adults would intervene? Too many times, there is no such point, there is only "we didn't know, it was that bad". Adults hide behind those words.

I have spoken with parents, whose children have committed suicide after years of bullying. I have spoken with children, who have had suicidal tendencies, because they have been bullied for years. I have spoken with adults, who have deep scars, because they were bullied for years at school. Unspeakable violence has made permanent cracks to their lives. The violence they have suffered is such, that they all have had difficulties to get help or even understanding to the pain they have experienced.

We all have a right to live our lives without violence or even threat of it. We all have a responsibility to act so that our world would be non-violent. We all have a responsibility to see. We all have a responsibility to listen.

We can't hide behind the idea, that adults can't see bullying. We have to create such school cultures, where non-violent behaviour is a norm. We have to create such cultures, where children have a courage to get help, when words like "leave me alone" or "stop that", don't work. We have to create such cultures, where children trust adults and trust that adults will help. And most of all, we adults, must have a courage to ask and to listen.

Don't wait.Katri Kytöpuuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13073271338593796893noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-246681595417944610.post-39424734096953748242011-03-21T21:48:00.003+02:002011-03-21T22:17:32.858+02:00Too nice?I have a confession. Everytime, when I heard talk about somebody being too nice or too kind, I see red. I just can't undestand how positive behaviour is turned to be negative and bad. For example people who are targets of bullying aren't responsible of that, because they are too nice or too kind. They are targets, because bullies behave in an inappropriate way. Our world would be much better, if more of us would pay attention to our own behaviour and be nicer/kinder.

Nice/kind to me is something, that doesn't hurt others or ourselves. We have right to be treated in a civilized way, we have a right to have our own voice and we have a right to live without threat of violence. Then we have a responsibility to say aloud, when somebody hurts us, we have a resposibility to make clear, when somebodys behaviour hurts us. Too many times we just swallow the concequences of inappropriate behaviour and the hurt that it causes.

We really should think, what is our idea of of nice child. If nice means easy, silent almost invisible child, one that doesn't cause us any work, I would think twice. Because, then we don't think the best of the child, we think only ourselves. If we want children to grow genuinely nice/kind, they need to be assertive. They need to be able to stand up and defend themselves and their opinions. And the same time they should be able to listen others and be empathic. It's not impossible to be nice/kind to others and same time to oneself, it just requires more energy and work.

Are you nice/kind to others? Are you nice/kind to yourself?
Katri Kytöpuuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13073271338593796893noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-246681595417944610.post-62924557281716876192011-03-15T07:00:00.003+02:002011-03-15T07:25:52.275+02:00Oikeudenmukaisuus on subjektiivinen kokemusKävin kuuntelemassa Vox Helsinkiä, jossa puhui Martti Koskenniemi oikeudenmukaisuudesta. Puhe herätti minussa monenlaisia ajatuksia. Me puhumme usein oikeudenmukaisuudesta ikään kuin maailmassa olisi yksi kaikkien mielestä sama oikeudenmukaisuus.

Sovittelutilanteiden ohjaaminen on haastavaa vapaaehtoistyötä.
